Highly oriented materials are of major academic and commercial importance in areas ranging from resolution of crystal structures to application as polarizing films in displays. A few years ago, it was shown that oriented, extremely thin films (5-50 nm) of poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE, Teflon®) may induce highly efficient oriented growth of a broad range of materials deposited onto them (Nature, 352, 414 ( 1991)). The TRIBOTRAK permits to produce these remarkable orientation layers in a simple, consistent manner. This instrument has been designed for accurate and consistent deposition of highly oriented poly(tetrafluoroethylene) [PTFE] thin films in accordance with U.S. Patent 5,180,470. The equipment is comprised of two parts; a lower movable stage and a pivoting PTFE holder. The speed and direction of the stage are controlled by a precision micro-stepper motor. The temperature controlled sample support can accommodate substrates of different lengths up to 80 mm. The upper section is a counterbalanced, temperature controlled support for the PTFE rod. Holders are included to support the PTFE rod perpendicular or parallel to the substrate to be coated. This section is adjustable to accommodate substrates of different thicknesses. The interfacial pressure between the PTFE rod and the substrate is controlled by varying the weights loaded onto the PTFE holder. |
